Handling Storm Damaged Trees
If a tree on your property has been damaged by storms or strong winds, you may be wondering if you would save the tree and what to do. Here are some considerations: Evaluate the damage to determine if the tree needs to be repaired. There are many factors involved in this assessment. The health of the tree is impaired before the wind blows: If you answer affirmatively to any of the following questions:-Poor health due to diseases, decomposition, insects, soil problems, etc. Already existed before wind damage, remove and replace the tree It is recommended.
Trees whose roots are torn off the ground and laid by the wind: This usually occurs in larger trees due to existing root defects. Large trees cannot be repaired. Small trees less than 7m in height are also available. Uprooted trees should be straightened and replanted by a tutor immediately after a storm to prevent the roots from drying out.
  • Tilted trees are dangerous and must be removed.
  • Trees with broken large trunks, such as prominent large cracks, should be removed.
  • Eggplant condition: Is the big branch broken? If more than 50% of the branches are damaged, the tree must be removed.
  • What will the trees look like in the landscape after pruning to correct wind damage? Isn't the tree so damaged that it becomes an asset to the landscape? If so, consider removing and replacing the shaft.
  • If you are not sure whether to store or remove the tree, seek expert advice.

Determine the amount of correction you can perform. Think again about the safety factor! Ask yourself if you have enough experience to do all the pruning tasks that await you. If corrective actions require the use of a chainsaw, removal of large overhead branches, ground work, or removal of trees or branches near wires or electrical structures, it is advisable to hire a specialist with expertise to do this safely. Also, make sure that the tree does not contain twisted branches that could put pressure on it. Removing these branches can be dangerous because a sudden release of pressure can cause sudden and unpredictable recoil.
Use the proper size technique: The last thing you want to do is create more problems with the damaged tree. Uncut cuts serve as entry points for rot. Cut off wounds on the branches slow healing and can calm the disease. Remove this wound with a clean pruning.
During removal, do not cut branch rings (bulged bottoms found on some branches) or bark bumps (horseshoe-shaped protruding bark bumps that form at the junction of the branch and trunk and extend on either side of the branch/body junction).
Long or heavy damaged branches should be removed with a three-step cut to prevent the bark from being removed under the cut.
Wound dressings should not be applied as they can generally do more harm than good. Wound dressing should be applied to fresh pruning of oaks. This prevents insects from spreading oak wilt when eating fresh wounds such as pruning.
